What is SPN 96

SPN 96: Refers to a fault related to the engine coolant temperature sensor, which monitors the temperature of the engine coolant.

When SPN 96 is triggered, it indicates that the ECM is receiving incorrect or out-of-range data from the engine coolant temperature sensor, which can lead to engine overheating or underperformance.

Why It Happened

This fault code is typically caused by:

  • Low coolant levels or coolant leaks.
  • A malfunctioning engine coolant temperature sensor.
  • Wiring issues or poor connections between the sensor and ECM.
  • A malfunctioning thermostat not regulating the coolant temperature correctly.
  • Contamination in the coolant affecting sensor readings.

How to Resolve It

To resolve SPN 96:

  1. Check the coolant level and top off if necessary.
  2. Inspect the engine coolant temperature sensor for damage and replace it if faulty.
  3. Test the thermostat to ensure it is functioning properly.
  4. Inspect the wiring and connectors for any signs of wear, corrosion, or loose connections.
  5. After repairs, clear the fault code and restart the engine to ensure the issue is resolved.

How to Avoid Before It Happens

To prevent SPN 96:

  • Regularly check coolant levels and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
  • Maintain the engine coolant temperature sensor and wiring in good condition.
  • Use Clue to monitor engine temperature data and receive early alerts for sensor or cooling system failures.
