Why an IFTA Calculator Matters
IFTA reporting is time-sensitive and error-prone. This calculator turns trip and fuel logs into a clean summary you can use to prep filings and reconcile fuel tax credits.
Great for:
- Carriers and owner-operators filing quarterly IFTA
- Back-office teams validating miles, gallons, and rates
- Estimating liability before closing the quarter
How the Calculator Works
- Enter basics
- Base jurisdiction, quarter, and fuel type (e.g., Diesel, Gasoline).
- Add states (jurisdictions)
- For each state/province you traveled, enter taxable miles and taxable gallons.
- We compute
- Look-up a state fuel tax rate for the selected fuel.
- Multiply gallons × rate to estimate state tax.
- Sum states for a total IFTA tax.
Assumptions: posted rates are simplified for illustration; surcharge/variable components and province rates are not shown here. Always confirm current official rates for the quarter you’re filing.
Example
Inputs:
- Quarter: Q1-2024, Fuel: Diesel
- CA: 3,200 miles, 410 gal
- AZ: 1,050 miles, 130 gal
Results (illustrative):
- CA tax = 410 × 0.400 = $164.00
- AZ tax = 130 × 0.180 = $23.40
- Total IFTA Tax = $187.40
Pro Tips
- Keep logs clean: Daily odometer, GPS, and pump receipts reduce adjustments.
- Use one fuel type per vehicle: Mixed fuels complicate credits and rates.
- Mind exempt miles: Private roads or qualified off-road use may be excluded per jurisdiction.
- Reconcile to purchases: Gallons reported should tie to invoices or card statements.
Benefits & Limits
Benefits
- Fast, state-by-state breakdown
- Clear per-state tax and total
- Adds/removes jurisdictions on the fly
Limits
- Rates here are simplified for demo use and may differ by quarter
- Does not calculate MPG balancing, credits, or interest/penalties
Official filings require jurisdiction-specific rules and current rate tables
